Humanitarian context
Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world and has been in a war for over seven years. Due to the conflict, the economic decline and the collapse of public institutions, including the health system, Yemen’s crisis is recognised as one of the worst in the world and the needs of the population are constantly rising. In 2022, more than 70% of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance: 19 million people are food insecure (compared to 16 million in 2021), including more than 2 million children at risk of acute malnutrition.
Despite the signing of a truce between the parties to the conflict in April 2022, renewed in June and August, an intensification of the crisis is feared in the absence of a sustainable de-escalation of the conflict, significant improvements in the economy and sufficient funding to cover humanitarian needs.

Description of the mission
Première Urgence Internationale is present in Yemen since 2007, assisting the most vulnerable populations in conflict-affected areas, which are affected by high rates of food insecurity and severe acute malnutrition.
Through our integrated activities focused on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, food security and psychosocial support sectors, we support the primary health system in the most vulnerable areas of Hodeidah (North), Raymah (North) and Taizz (South) governorates. Première Urgence Internationale is currently supporting 18 health facilities, and has developed areas for mothers-children activities in six of them.
Premiere Urgence Internationale in action
In response to this critical situation of malnutrition and deterioration of the primary health system, Première Urgence Internationale is implementing integrated and multisectoral programmes, supporting health and nutritional structures in the most affected areas of the governorates of Hodeidah, Raymah and Taizz.
The main areas of intervention of the mission are the fight against malnutrition and the improvement of access to the primary health system, with a major component on sexual and reproductive health. The NGO is involved in the provision of medical and nutritional inputs, the training of medical staff and the general maintenance of targeted facilities in the intervention areas. As part of this integrated approach, Première Urgence Internationale is also implementing activities to rehabilitate health and water infrastructures in the health facilities, as well as food security activities through the distribution of food baskets to households with children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. In order to have a more sustainable impact, community volunteers are trained in the dissemination of good practices related to health, hygiene and nutrition, and on the detection of malnutrition. Finally, in some structures, Première Urgence Internationale has created safe and welcoming spaces that offer comprehensive support to pregnant women and young mothers, as well as their children in need of psychosocial support.
